Are you moving house? Do you want to explore other suburbs? In this article I will share my past experience in choosing which suburb suits me the best.
Usually, I’ll start searching which suburb I want to live in. Consider factors such as:
How far is the distance to uni?
The further distance to uni, the more fees you have to pay for public transport. However, consider this: if you stay close to uni, you may able to use alternative transport to uni such as walk and bicycle. You can even study at uni until late night and walk home.
Public transport fare
Do you have a fixed transportation? If you are lucky, maybe you have your own car. Sometimes you will need to rely on public transport at certain times, and you have to ride taxi home. How much does it cost you? Staying too far is not a good choice unless you have friends who stay at Zone 1 or Zone 2.
Time estimated
My past experience is staying at Southern zone is better due to the express lane for buses. However, there are express lanes for buses to Northern suburbs now. Hopefully that will decrease the travel time and avoid peak hour traffic jam.
Frequent of bus
Some bus only come every 60 minutes. Make sure you’ve done your research before moving into that suburb. One good tip: search for the closest bus stop when you are doing house inspection! Buses that comes every 15 minutes is a good place. More frequent the bus; the better.
The average price of that area
Some suburbs are more expensive than other suburbs. For example, Kangaroo Point is a good place for student to stay, but the rates are exceptionally high. And City Cats only come every 30 minutes.
Types of public transport
What public transports are available in that area? I am staying at Toowong (Zone 2) and I think this is a perfect spot. I can choose to take trains, Citycat or bus. Look for suburbs which offer multiple means of public transport. Usually bus and train.
Choose South Bank for QUT students, Hawken Drive for UQ students if you prefer to walk to uni.
Conclusion
So. which is your best suburb to live in? Leave comments below.
