Hello everyone!! New students and old students, welcome back to Brisbane. Say bye to my summer holiday and it’s time to back to my first semester of 2010. For you returning readers, you must no doubt be aware of the changes on Brisbane Students Guide website. For new readers, you will receive the best information or whatever you want to know about Brisbane it can be found here.

University is beginning in few days and have you attended your O-week in Uni. Don’t miss out all the fun in O-week. WAIT! What about my accommodation in Brisbane? A common question will never stop asking by the new students. It is very important to have a comfortable and safe place to live in.

There are few options for your accommodation in Brisbane.

Living in a dorm

If you are looking for a place to live immediately after you have touchdown in Brisbane. Uni lodge or dorm would be the best option. You can settle and pay all the payments before you arrive in Brisbane but the rent is slightly expensive than renting a unit. It is because you are paying for foods, facilities, electric, internet and more bills. Besides, you can meet a lot of students from different countries and learn their culture.

Share house with your friends

If you arrive Brisbane with a group of friends, renting a 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms would be the great idea. First and foremost, the rent will be sharing among of you all. Second, you can have all the house party you want during the weekend. Lastly, you don’t feel home sick because you know there is someone there for you.

Share house with random housemates

Basically, you ‘occupy’ the spare room that are offered by tenants who own/rented the house, and share the rent accordingly. You will experience a new living style because you are living with students from different backgrounds and culture.

Rent a unit/house yourself

If you are planning to rent a unit/house. There are pro’s and con’s. The bad thing is, you need to attend house inspection before you are allowed to rent a unit/house from the landlord or real estate agencies. Therefore, you might go through a streak of troubles while looking for a unit/house, especially with limited transport. Traveling between unfamiliar suburbs need a lot of planning and time. Good thing with staying in your own unit is that privacy and freedom is guaranteed.

How much does it costs for the rent?

It depends on a lot of factors such as location, transportation and types of accommodation. Here’s a rough estimate.

For 1bedroom – below AUD200

For 2 bedrooms – between AUD300 and AUD500

For 3 bedrooms – more than AUD 600

What types of accommodation are available?

Unit, Townhouse, and Dorm.

Do we have to pay water bill?

No, water are free unless you use it excessively.

Update: Home owner needs to pay for water. Recently, water bill is separated with council rate, and its now called Water and Sewerage account, under management of QLD urban utilities.

Does the rent include the electric and internet bill?

If you are renting a unit, you have to apply the electric and internet.

If you are sharing a house, you have to share the bills.

P/S: some unit/house you have to pay for the gas bill.
