Calling all SPORTS FANS! Tired of waiting for the next Olympics or the World Cup? No fret, because the annual Asean Games will be held in Brisbane this weekend! Amongst University students that is…. The sports carnival involves student athletes from Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore and is held from the 27th of September until the 1st of October, 2009, sporadically around Brisbane.

Why would I bother attending?

Nahh don’t say that! For those who aren’t participating as athletes nor have anyone to watch in particular, it is a great opportunity to be patriotic in a foreign land and to cheer on your country of origin to sporting glory. As for those not from any of the participating nations, you are more than welcomed to pick a side to cheer, to meet new friends, and also to experience the diverse culture provided by players and fans of the participating nations. However, it is not all sports as there will also be cultural shows, movies, and food stalls for those with slower adrenaline rush.

Where and when?

Sunday, 27-09-2009
(*) 08.00-17.00 Opening Ceremony and Soccer Match
(*) 09.00-13.00 Netball
Venue: UQ Netball Court

(*) 15.00-17.00 Rugby

(*) 11.00-13.00 Movie Screening 1 at Schonell Theatre UQ ->> Indonesia: “Ada Apa Dengan Cinta?” (English-subtitled)

A 2002 Indonesian film directed by Rudy Soedjarwo. The Indonesian title is actually an untranslatable word play, as Cinta (Indonesian for “love”) is also the name of the main character. As such the title can be translated as “What’s Up With Love?” as well as “What’s Up With Cinta (the person).”

The adventure of What’s Up with Love? lies in the question of whether damages caused by the “forbidden romance” were reversible, and whether it was possible for Cinta to remain faithful to her girlfriends without losing Rangga. The film is coloured with Indonesian mainstream as well as side stream values, elements of classical culture and politics, real issues encountered in teen life, and unique adventures and surprises.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ada_Apa_dengan_Cinta%3F

(*) 12.00-16.00 Festival and Bazaar at UQ Lake (right in front of the UQ Bookstore)
Festivity of cultural exhibition, performances, fashion show. There will also be garage sales, delicious food stalls, and games. Dont miss out!

(*) 15.00-17.00 Movie Screening 2 at Schonell Theatre UQ ->> Singapore: “I Not Stupid”
An internationally-acclaimed movie. (English-subtitled)

The film portrays the lives, struggles, and adventures of three Primary 6 pupils who are placed in the academically inferior EM3 stream (which, as a result of parliamentary debates following the release of the film, was abolished in 2008). This satirical comedy criticizes the Singaporean education system and social attitudes in Singapore, including the competitive kiasu (fear of losing) mentality and over-obedience to authority.

“I Not Stupid” won several awards, including the Best Chinese Film Award, at the Golden Bauhinia Awards, and the Best Chinese Humanitarian Film Award at the 2002 Taiwan Golden Torch Awards. The film was also nominated for Best Asian Film at the Hong Kong Film Awards. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Not_Stupid

A battle between the bands from Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. Come and see the performance!
